These are the results of my question. I asked 10 people of various ages but the majority of the people that I asked were younger than 25, and in particular between the ages of 17-21. I decided to mainly focus the attention of the questionnaire to people between these ages because I believe that the main bulk of readers who will buy music magazines will be between these ages. I was also surprised to find that most people only listen to music for between 1-4 hours a week, which would suggest that music doesn’t play as big a role in teenagers and young adult’s life as I thought it did, which means that I would need to take this into consideration when making the magazine.

Different Photo's That Could Have Been Used

Different Photo’s That Could Have Been Used

I have decided to use a photo of two students reading a textbook as the main image for my magazine front cover. This is because I believe that it strongly represents what life will be like for anybody that is thinking about joining the school sixth form. Although I had already decided that I wanted to use this type of image, there are various different ways and methods that I could have used to give the image a different look and feel. Here are some of the images that were considered and the final image that was eventually selected:

1.

This was the first photo that I took with the camera. Although the photo includes the shot that I was primarily looking for, there is a major fault with the photo because the person on the right is looking at something else that is out of shot of the camera. This seriously de-contributes to the quality of the shot because it makes it look very unprofessional and relaxed, which is not what you would be looking for on the front cover of a sixth form magazine.

2.

This was the photo that was taken into serious consideration as it offers everything that I originally wanted to be on the front cover of my magazine. Both of the people on the front cover are reading a text book whilst smiling at the same time, which gives very positive connotations to the school and the environment that they are in. Although as I spent more time looking at the photo, I came to the conclusion that the person on the rights smile may have been a bit too cheesy and artificial, so I decided to take one more shot that involved the person on the right doing something slightly different.

Final Photo

I decided that this photo was perfect for the front cover of my magazine because it offered everything that I wanted in my original plans. I also decided that it would probably be better if the person on the right looked at the camera and smiled, because this looks as though he is addressing the audience and telling anybody who is looking at the magazine that he is working hard, yet he is enjoying himself at the same time.

Examples of Sixth Form Magazines

Examples of Sixth Form Magazines
1.      Nicholas Chamberlaine Technology College

·         The masthead in this magazine is in the top left hand corner of the page. It uses a basic red font which correlates with the main colour theme of the front cover, which is also red. I think that this masthead is reasonably effective because it is clear and simple (along with the title of the magazine) and clearly stands out from the main image. The red bar underneath the masthead also helps it to stand out.
·         The skyline in this front cover is only used to show the name of the sixth form college that has produced the magazine, when normally it would be used to advertise a feature that is in the magazine.
·         This front cover has the simple slogan which says ‘The Sixth form Magazine for you’. This is effective because it directly tells the person viewing the front cover that their sixth form is the right choice for them, and subtly hints that there is no better option for them.
·         The main anchorage text refers to the new start that will occur when somebody first starts at sixth form, and is at the bottom of the page in a reasonably large sized text. Also in a smaller text just below is a sentence that stresses the importance of A-Levels and how you need to make the most of them. This, in conjunction with the slogan makes the reader feel as if they need to be serious about their future, and shows that the sixth form that this magazine is representing can be an important stepping stone to their future success.
·         The main Image that is used on this front cover is very common amongst many other sixth form magazines. It shows two students (a boy and a girl) reading a text book and smiling whilst doing so. This gives off positive connotations of school and learning and suggests that if the reader comes to this sixth form college, then they will also enjoy learning and will feel positive about doing so, eventually leading to successful results for that student. Also having a boy and a girl on the front cover suggests equality in the sixth form, whereas if two boys or two girls had been used, this equality perhaps would not have been so evident.
·         As touched upon before, the colour scheme of the front cover is mainly bright red. This has mostly been used because it is the same colour as the sixth forms recognized colours.
·         The overall layout of the magazine is very neat and tidy (which may suggest that the sixth form itself is quite strict), and everything is placed carefully on the page.

2.      Southend High School for Girls

·         The masthead in this front cover is very clear and is also in the top left hand side of the front cover. The green and white that is used in the masthead probably represents the school colours. What is effective about this masthead is that it uses the same ‘S’in both the schools abbreviation and in the word ‘success’ The large ‘S’ instantly draws the attention of the reader to the title of the magazine.
·         The skyline in this front cover is used very simply, to show the name of the school that the magazine represents, and the issue of the magazine and the date it was published. As it is the very first issue of the magazine, I think it would have been more effective to add greater emphasis on this fact.
·         This magazine doesn’t really have a slogan as such, although the word ‘Success’ underneath the abbreviation of the school could perhaps be considered as the closest thing to a slogan.
·         The main anchorage text in this front cover is shared amongst to phrases: ‘Top 10 Revision Tips’ and ‘Happy 99th Birthday’.  The top 10 revision tips phrase is very effective because it is likely to draw the attention of anybody that is taking their exams, which is likely to lead to them actually picking up the magazine and reading the part of the magazine that is dedicated to these tips. Although it is unlikely to make somebody want to read the magazine, the phrase ‘Happy 99th Birthday’ suggests the age of the school, which may lead to the reader thinking that the school will be very good due to its age and long history.
·         This magazine has also used a very common main image that is used in sixth form magazines, a student holding a text book and smiling for the camera (in this case a girl, which represents the fact that it is a school for girls only). This gives of a positive image and makes the reader believe that if they attend this school, they will also be happy and successful.
·          The logo of the school has been put in the top right hand corner of the magazine, to help the reader to recognize and remember the school for future reference.
·         In the bottom left hand corner , there is a textbox which contains the sentence ‘WIN AN IPOD NANO’. This entices the person looking at the magazine to actually read the magazine for further details on how to win the device, which is a very common, yet very clever device.
·         The overall colour scheme is mainly green, as half of the masthead is green and there are trees and bushes in the background that are also green . Green is a colour which is often used to signify peace and tranquillity, which may have been used intentionally to reflect the attitude and feel of the school itself.

How I Will Create My Sixth Form Magazine

How I Will Create My Sixth Form Magazine

In order to create a good sixth form magazine, I will need to undertake research on the different kinds of sixth form magazines that are already out and establish what is consistent throughout all of the magazines and what is different in each individual magazine.  In order to do this I will be deconstructing two different existing sixth form magazines. Then I will begin to take pictures and highlight the potential images that I will use for the front cover and I will point out what is good about them, and I will also compare the pictures that I don’t think are good enough to use on the front cover and say why I think this. After this I will select one image to use on the front cover and then I will make the front cover itself. Once I have done this, I will deconstruct my front cover and say what’s good about it. Finally to finish the task, I will give a rough idea of what my contents page should like and give a very basic example of it.
